OpenAI unveils GPT-5.6 in a staged global rollout, offering improved access for free users and advanced capabilities for subscribers, amid rising competition from other AI models.
OpenAI is preparing a broader rollout of GPT-5.6, a model update that will change what free ChatGPT users see first and expand the capabilities available to paying customers. According to the company, the move is designed to improve access while keeping heavier features, such as file handling and image generation, on separate limits.
For free and Go users, OpenAI says text-only chats will no longer be capped in the same way, although limits will still apply to uploads, image tools, voice features and AI image creation. The default model for those users will shift to GPT-5.6 Luna, replacing GPT-5.5, and a new “Think” button will let users switch on stronger reasoning for harder prompts and tasks.
The changes also reflect a sharper commercial strategy. Axios reported that OpenAI is under growing pressure from lower-cost open-weight models from China and from rivals including Anthropic, making product value and ease of use more important. OpenAI’s own model documentation says GPT-5.6 is being introduced in tiers: Sol as the flagship option, Terra as a lower-cost model and Luna as the fastest and most affordable.
Paid subscribers are also getting an upgrade. OpenAI says Plus and Pro users will receive GPT-5.6 Sol, which is intended to perform better on everyday work such as research, writing, planning and decision-making. The company says the new version is meant to produce shorter, more dependable answers, while its help pages add that Sol is built for more demanding work in areas such as coding, science, cybersecurity and computer use.
OpenAI’s rollout is starting globally and is expected to expand over roughly 24 hours, according to the company’s launch notes. Its help centre also says availability and usage limits still vary by plan and workspace, with GPT-5.5 Instant remaining the default for fast responses on some accounts. That means the update is less a single switch than a staged rebalancing of ChatGPT’s free and paid experience.
