OpenAI has expanded its Codex desktop strategy to Linux, releasing a preview of a native app for Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora systems. The move gives Linux users direct access to ChatGPT and Codex in a desktop environment rather than forcing them to rely on browser-based tools or command-line access alone.
According to the company’s release notes and coverage by Techiexpert, the preview supports both x64 and ARM64 hardware and is packaged as official .deb and .rpm builds. OpenAI is initially targeting Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13 and Fedora 43 and 44, while acknowledging that some downstream distributions should remain broadly compatible. Community-made Arch Linux packages are also already circulating, though those are not official.
The app is designed to switch between three modes from a menu in the top-left corner. ChatGPT handles general prompts, ChatGPT Work is aimed at longer-form reports and document drafting, and Codex opens a coding workspace tied to local projects. OpenAI says developers can connect folders and repositories, then use Codex to edit files, manage Git tasks, run terminal commands, inspect code and generate unit tests. The app also includes a browser that supports Chrome extensions.
The Linux preview is more constrained than some of OpenAI’s desktop releases on other platforms. Techiexpert reported that automated agent control is limited to the built-in browser and does not extend to wider computer-use actions outside the approved environment or linked project directories. That places the Linux build closer to a controlled development tool than a fully autonomous desktop agent, even as OpenAI continues broadening Codex across operating systems and product tiers.
