OpenAI has launched GPT-5.6 Sol, introducing an ‘ultra’ mode that employs parallel agents for accelerated complex tasks, marking a shift towards more autonomous AI systems designed for professional workflows.
OpenAI has expanded its GPT-5.6 line with a flagship model called Sol and a new “ultra” mode aimed at shorter time-to-result on demanding work. In the company’s account, the system is built to do more useful work per token, with stronger performance on coding, knowledge work, cybersecurity and science while relying on fewer model turns and less guidance. The release follows a limited preview for trusted partners and is now being moved towards general availability.
The most significant technical change is the addition of “ultra”, which OpenAI says coordinates multiple agents in parallel. That approach is designed for tasks that benefit from breaking work into separate streams, such as debugging, research, document production and complex tool use. OpenAI also says GPT-5.6 Sol can run with higher reasoning effort through a “max” setting, while “ultra” pushes further by using subagents to accelerate difficult jobs.
The company is positioning the model as a tool for professional workflows rather than a simple chat upgrade. In its launch materials, OpenAI says the system produces stronger results in coding, presentations, spreadsheets and long-horizon analysis, including work that depends on browser use, external files and software tools. It also says the model’s safety stack has been tightened for high-risk and cybersecurity-related requests, reflecting the greater capability of the new release.
OpenAI’s pricing and access model is split across the GPT-5.6 family. Sol sits at the top of the range, while Terra is aimed at broader everyday use and Luna at lower cost. The company says GPT-5.6 is available across ChatGPT, Codex and the API, with broader rollout expected within 24 hours of launch. That places the release in line with a wider industry trend: moving from one-shot answers towards agent-like systems that can plan, call tools and complete multi-step work with less human intervention.
