Pi Network to tie App Studio pricing to AI usage, shifting focus to utility and sustainability

Pi Network announces a new pricing model for Pi App Studio, aligning costs with AI infrastructure consumption and emphasising practical app utility, potentially reshaping the ecosystem’s development landscape.

Pi Network is preparing to alter the pricing of Pi App Studio on 24 August, in a move that could change the economics of building and running applications in the ecosystem. According to a post by @amr_nannaware on X, the new structure is intended to track the real cost of the AI services used by each app, rather than applying a single flat rate across the board.

The adjustment comes after Pi App Studio was expanded to make app creation more accessible and more tightly linked to the wider Pi environment. Pi Network has recently moved the studio into the top navigation bar in Pi Desktop, alongside the mining app and Node, and has added AI-assisted features such as logo generation, welcome messages for chatbots and broader editing tools. The company has also pushed to make it easier for developers to turn AI-built projects into Pi Apps through integrations with external coding tools.

Under the reported pricing change, standard charges would be more closely tied to consumption of AI infrastructure, which is a model already familiar in cloud and software services. That means more resource-intensive apps could cost more to create or operate than simpler ones. Pi Network is said not to be adding a margin on top of those costs, presenting the change as a pass-through rather than a profit-making layer.

At the same time, the platform appears to be keeping subsidies for projects that show genuine use. The information shared by @amr_nannaware indicates that apps demonstrating real utility and attracting actual users may still qualify for reduced pricing. That would shift the emphasis from broad experimentation towards applications that can show sustained activity and practical value.

The timing is notable because Pi Network has been broadening App Studio’s reach this year, including payment integration, ad-supported app creation for users with low balances and community incentive schemes. In that context, the new pricing model looks designed to make the platform more financially sustainable without closing off development entirely. For creators, the main task before 24 August is to assess how heavily their apps rely on AI services and whether they can build an audience strong enough to remain eligible for support.
