Synology’s ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 introduces broader platform support, seamless cross-environment recovery, and enhanced security, signifying a major step forward in hybrid cloud data protection.
Synology has released ActiveProtect Manager 2.0, a major update for its ActiveProtect backup appliances that broadens platform support, adds cross-environment recovery options and introduces stronger protection for stored data. The company says the software is designed to simplify backup operations for hybrid infrastructures by combining dedicated storage with centralised management in a single appliance-based system.
The update extends coverage to Amazon EC2, Azure VM, Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV and Google Workspace, giving administrators a wider range of systems to protect from one console. According to Synology, the new cross-platform recovery function also allows workloads to be backed up in one environment and restored into another, a capability aimed at disaster recovery and at moving workloads between platforms with less manual intervention.
Synology has also widened the list of supported backup targets. ActiveProtect Vault now works with more Synology NAS models, while Azure Blob Storage has been added as a copy and tiering destination. The company says backups held in Amazon S3 Storage or Azure Blob Storage can be restored directly to Amazon EC2 or Azure VM without first passing through on-premises hardware, which should cut recovery times in cloud-based incident response scenarios.
Security is another central theme of the release. ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 adds volume-level software encryption for data at rest, so backup data and system settings remain unreadable if drives are stolen or hardware is lost. Looking ahead, Synology says version 2.1 will add AI and machine-learning anomaly detection, quarantine suspicious backup copies for review and scan restores for malware with third-party antivirus engines including Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender and ESET. If malware is found in the latest backup, the system will revert to the most recent clean version.
The software is available at no extra charge for DP Series appliances. Synology, which was founded in Taiwan in 2000 and focuses on NAS, backup and networking products, says the ActiveProtect range is part of its broader hybrid-cloud strategy for business data protection.
