Tencent is testing an AI agent inside WeChat that could shift the app from a place where users tap and search to one where software acts on their behalf. The feature, called Xiaowei, has been highlighted by Tencent for the first time in its latest earnings update, with the company saying it is designed around privacy and more efficient inference, the computing step used to generate AI responses.
WeChat already sits at the centre of daily life for more than a billion users in China, combining messaging, payments, transport, shopping and services in one interface. According to reports from Yahoo Finance and other technology outlets, Xiaowei is being tried in a limited release and can be reached through text or voice prompts. It can search the web, summarise chats and Moments posts, draft replies and launch mini-programmes for tasks such as booking transport, flights or meals.
That makes Xiaowei more ambitious than a conventional chatbot. A chatbot can recommend a restaurant; an agent is intended to carry out the booking. In practice, early tests suggest Tencent is still working through the gap between that promise and everyday use. Reports from users with access to the trial describe a system that can often complete basic actions, but sometimes takes minutes and still requires human intervention before a task is finished.
The broader significance is strategic as well as technical. Tencent is trying to make WeChat harder to replace at a time when rivals such as Alibaba and ByteDance are also pushing deeper into AI-enabled consumer services. If Xiaowei becomes reliable at handling routine tasks inside the app, it could increase engagement and strengthen Tencent’s grip on the super-app model. If it remains slow or inconsistent, it will remain an interesting preview rather than a practical assistant.
