Microsoft has warned that Windows 11 version 24H2 will fall out of support for Home and Pro users on 13 October 2026, ending monthly security and quality updates for those editions. The timing matters because Microsoft’s servicing model gives consumer and business desktop releases a 24-month lifecycle, meaning devices that stay on 24H2 will gradually lose protection against newly disclosed vulnerabilities unless they are moved to a supported build. Microsoft’s own support pages now carry the end-of-updates notice for 24H2 Home and Pro.
The main replacement path is Windows 11 25H2, which Microsoft says shares the same underlying platform as 24H2 and arrives through an enablement package on eligible devices. That should make the move relatively straightforward for most PCs already on 24H2, with 25H2 carrying support through 12 October 2027 for Pro editions and longer for Enterprise. Microsoft says unmanaged consumer systems can receive the upgrade automatically, while more cautious users can initiate it through Windows Update.
The bigger complication is for mixed fleets. Windows 11 24H2 Enterprise and Education editions remain supported until 12 October 2027, creating a one-year gap between otherwise identical-looking installations. Windows Central said Microsoft is also preparing broader Windows 11 interface changes in the coming weeks, including Taskbar and Start menu updates, while August Insider builds show the company continuing to refine customisation, accessibility and File Explorer performance. That broader development work does not alter the 24H2 deadline, but it underlines how quickly Windows feature releases now move from preview to deployment.
For administrators, the practical task is to separate edition and build data in endpoint inventories before the cutoff. Devices running Pro should be identified and prioritised, because they will stop receiving patches while Enterprise systems on the same feature version remain covered. Microsoft recommends validating line-of-business software, VPN clients, endpoint security tools and encryption before rolling out 25H2 through Windows Update for Business, Intune or other deployment rings.
