3D printing innovations transform cluttered office spaces into custom-organised workstations

A maker-led approach to office upgrades using 3D printing custom accessories is reshaping how small businesses optimise their work environments, prioritising fit and functionality over off-the-shelf solutions.

3D printing has become one of the most practical ways to tailor a workspace to exact needs, especially when standard retail products fall short. For Patrick Campanale, the appeal lies less in novelty than in solving problems that off-the-shelf accessories do not address. His office upgrades include a custom stand for a thermal label printer, under-desk mounts for a MacBook Pro and Thunderbolt dock, and a wall-mounted storage system that keeps tools and supplies off the desktop.

The label-printer stand is the simplest example of that approach. Campanale said he ships a large number of parcels for a small business, which meant his printer was always in use but never particularly tidy. A model designed specifically for his machine gave him a raised platform with space for fan-fold labels below and a roll holder behind it. A similar ready-made organiser is sold by CGTrader, but Campanale’s version was printed for only a few hours and used less than $2 of filament, according to the article. The result was a compact station that improved both appearance and workflow.

His most effective space-saving change was moving the MacBook Pro and Thunderbolt dock under the desk. Campanale wanted to clear surface area without sacrificing easy access to the laptop’s USB-C port and SD card slot. He found a minimal mount for the MacBook on MakerWorld and installed it beneath the desk after a few attempts with the screws. For the dock, no suitable model existed, so he designed one himself in Shapr3D. That kind of custom mounting is difficult to achieve with conventional office furniture, although commercial printer stands and carts from companies such as Shelving Inc. and Mount-It! can also free up desk space in a less customised way.

The most ambitious change was a modular wall-storage system built with MultiBoard. Campanale had previously used Wall Control panels, but said they did not suit his office. MultiBoard, described by its creators as a free modular organisation platform built around a 25 mm standard, gave him a more flexible layout for filament, screws, calipers, flashlights and tweezers. The system is designed for expansion, and its modular format mirrors a wider trend in maker-led storage tools, including desk-mounted systems such as Cargo Connect tiles sold through Thangs. In practice, the appeal is simple: keep frequently used items visible, reachable and off the work surface.

Campanale’s broader point is that 3D printing is not just about making parts; it is about making spaces work better. Many of these accessories could be approximated with straps, brackets or generic furniture, but that would not deliver the same fit or efficiency. The article argues that 3D printing is most valuable when a task needs a shape, size or layout that no standard product provides. In that sense, the technology is less a hobby add-on than a tool for solving small but persistent problems in daily work.
