Apple’s revised Mac chargers could leave older travel accessories incompatible

Apple has quietly replaced the removable plug design on its 70W and 140W Mac adapters, prompting customers to check whether existing extension cables and travel kits will still fit.

Apple has quietly updated its 70W and 140W Mac power adapters with a revised AC connector, a change that also affects the company’s Power Adapter Extension Cable and its World Travel Adapter Kit. The new fitting, referred to in recent reporting as “AC Connector 2”, replaces the previous plug design and is intended to resolve compatibility issues with older accessories while meeting updated regulatory requirements, according to MacRumours and other Apple coverage.

The change matters because Apple’s removable wall plugs and extension hardware are designed to work together. As MacRumours reported, older extension cables and plug heads may not seat properly on the redesigned chargers, which means owners of recent MacBook power accessories may need to check whether existing travel gear is still usable. Apple has not framed the update as a major product launch, but rather as a practical hardware revision with immediate compatibility consequences for customers.

Alongside the chargers, Apple has brought back its World Travel Adapter Kit in the United States at $39. The kit includes five interchangeable plug heads for Type A, Type C, Type D, Type G and Type I outlets, covering regions including North America, continental Europe, India, the UK, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand, according to Apple’s store listing.

Apple says the kit works with compatible USB, USB-C and MagSafe power adapters that use a removable AC wall plug. For travellers, the detail to watch is the connector shape itself: older accessories designed for the previous plug standard are not guaranteed to fit the new adapters. In practical terms, customers buying the refreshed 70W or 140W charger may also need to replace their extension cable or travel kit to avoid a mismatch.
