FiiO ventures into gaming with its budget-friendly FG3 headset, combining hi-fi audio expertise with features like virtual 7.1 surround sound and coaxial dual drivers, challenging premium rivals with compelling value.
FiiO’s FG3 marks a notable first step into gaming audio for a company better known for hi-fi gear. The headset is pitched at $69.99 in the US and around €70 in Germany, which places it firmly in budget territory for a product that, according to FiiO, combines coaxial dual drivers, a dedicated DSP chip and virtual 7.1 surround sound. Reviews so far suggest that the company has translated much of its audio expertise into a headset aimed at gamers who also care about music and general-purpose listening.
The hardware is built around a coaxial dual-driver arrangement, pairing 50 mm and 16 mm dynamic units, with FiiO also bundling a detachable ENC microphone and a browser-based EQ system through its Control web platform. That approach removes the need for a desktop app, letting users adjust profiles through a web interface instead. FiiO says the headset supports broad cross-platform use, including consoles, PC and mobile devices, while the foldable frame and swappable earpads are intended to improve portability and comfort.
Early testing has been largely positive on sound. Tom’s Guide said the FG3’s default tuning is not the best out of the box, but praised the headset’s comfort, customisation options and overall value. GamingNexus went further, arguing that the FG3 can compete with far pricier wired and wireless headsets once its EQ is adjusted, and said its clarity at high volumes and strong bass control make it especially effective for music as well as games. The publication also reported convincing spatial effects in titles such as Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, where virtual surround enhanced shipboard ambience and open-sea directionality.
There are, however, some caveats. Tom’s Guide noted weaker build quality and a muddy default profile, while GamingNexus said the fit could feel slightly loose and the cable length was awkward in everyday use. Even so, the wider consensus is that FiiO has launched a headset that offers unusually capable sound for the money. For buyers who want one wired device for gaming, calls and music, the FG3 appears to be a serious value proposition rather than a token entry-level product.
