Google plans a software-focused overhaul of its Pixel Buds, introducing new voice controls, live translation enhancements, and improved ecosystem connectivity in an upcoming September update for Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a.
Google is preparing a software-focused refresh for its Pixel Buds line rather than a new pair of earbuds this year. According to Google’s official announcement, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a will begin receiving new features in September, with the update centred on voice control, automation and tighter links to the company’s wider device ecosystem.
One of the most notable additions is deeper Gemini integration, replacing the older Google Assistant experience on the earbuds. Google’s support pages say users will be able to change audio settings with direct voice commands, including requests such as increasing bass without stopping playback. The company also says Gemini can be set up as the default voice assistant on compatible devices and used through touch gestures on the earbuds.
The update also extends to the Pixel Watch. Google says the earbuds can now work with the watch to detect when a wearer falls asleep, automatically pausing music or podcasts, muting notifications and disabling touch controls on the buds. The aim is to reduce interruptions without requiring users to reach for their phone.
Live Translation is also being expanded. Google says the feature can now handle two-way conversations in more than 70 languages, with a tap on the earbuds starting listening mode while the paired phone plays back the other person’s response in their language. On the Pixel Buds Pro 2, Google is also adding Dynamic ANC, which is designed to keep noise cancellation stable if the earbuds shift slightly in the ear. The company has also introduced an olive green colour option for that model, priced at $189 in the US.
