How to prevent data loss from external SSDs amid increasing speed and portability

Portable SSDs have become a practical way to expand storage on phones and computers, especially when built-in memory starts to run short. But their speed does not remove the risk of data loss. Media Indonesia, citing guidance from Samsung and Microsoft, says the main hazards are unsafe removal, incomplete transfers, physical shock, cable incompatibility and the absence of backups.

The most common mistake is disconnecting the drive before the system has finished writing data. Microsoft warns that removing storage without using the Eject or Safely Remove Hardware function can corrupt files or damage the device. The same risk applies when large files are still being copied. If the connection drops before the transfer is complete, the result may be missing or damaged data. Samsung also advises users to avoid knocks and vibration, since physical damage can put stored files at risk.

Technical compatibility matters as much as handling. Apple has noted that transfer speed depends not only on the SSD itself but also on the USB standard supported by the host device and cable. In practice, a fast drive can still perform poorly if the cable only supports an older USB version, extending the time a transfer remains exposed to interruption. That increases the chance of corruption if the drive is unplugged too soon or the connection is unstable.

Specialist storage sources reinforce the same message. TechTarget lists heat, firmware faults, file system errors and misuse among the causes of SSD failure, while SanDisk’s support guidance points to cable quality, port speed, host-device interference and excess heat as common reasons for slow or unstable external-drive behaviour. Recovery may still be possible after accidental deletion, formatting or corruption, according to SysDev Labs, but the chances fall quickly once users continue writing new data to the drive.

For that reason, the safest habit is simple: verify that file transfers have finished, check copied files before deleting the originals and keep at least one backup in another location. Regular backups, proper cables, current firmware and careful physical handling remain the most effective defences against permanent loss.
