Octopus Energy unveils Octopus Charge, a new app aiming to streamline public EV charging across North America by integrating over 200,000 chargers and offering real-time availability, flexible settings, and cost transparency, though key networks like Tesla remain unsupported.
Octopus Energy has launched Octopus Charge, a new app designed to cut down the clutter EV drivers face when trying to pay for public charging. The company says the service brings together more than 200,000 chargers across North America, including the United States, Canada and Mexico, so motorists should be able to use one account rather than juggling multiple operator apps.
The app shows live charger availability, charging speed, connector type, pricing and nearby facilities. Octopus says drivers can enter their vehicle make and model so the software can recommend suitable charging settings, while a single payment method is meant to handle billing across supported networks. The company has already operated a similar service in Europe and elsewhere, suggesting this is an expansion of an existing model rather than an untested idea.
A notable claim is that Octopus Charge passes through the charging network’s own tariff without adding a mark-up on energy costs. That matters because third-party roaming services often charge convenience fees or build extra costs into the transaction. Octopus is presenting the app as a way to simplify charging without making sessions more expensive than they need to be.
Even so, the launch has clear limits. The app does not yet include several of the biggest fast-charging networks in North America, including Tesla Superchargers, Ionna and Electrify America, according to InsideEVs. That leaves a significant gap, particularly because Tesla’s network remains one of the most widely used options for reliable long-distance charging. Electrify America, for its part, continues to offer its own app, with real-time availability, contactless payment and membership benefits, while Tesla supports charging for some non-Tesla vehicles through its own app and payment system.
