Philips Hue to integrate direct music control with Sonos, enhancing automation and responsiveness

Leaked support documents suggest Philips Hue is developing a new feature enabling users to manage Sonos music playback directly via Hue hardware, signalling a deeper ecosystem integration with local control and automated scenes.

Philips Hue appears to be preparing a deeper tie-up with Sonos that would move beyond voice control and into direct music playback control from Hue hardware, according to a leaked support page cited by HueBlog. The feature, described as “Sonos Accessory Control”, would let users manage Sonos speakers through Philips Hue remote controls and the Hue Bridge, extending an integration that already links the two ecosystems through voice commands.

The reported functions are broad for a lighting platform. Users would be able to play or pause music, skip tracks, return to the previous song, launch a preset track or radio station, and change volume. Because the controls would sit inside the Hue system, they could also be added to scenes and automations, allowing lighting and audio to be triggered together from a single button press. For example, a room could switch to a chosen colour scheme while a playlist starts at the same time.

A key part of the design is that communication would run locally through the Philips Hue Bridge rather than over the internet. In practical terms, that should reduce dependence on external services and may improve responsiveness. Setup is said to require only a Sonos account to be added within the Philips Hue app. It is not yet clear whether the feature will require the standard bridge or the more expensive Bridge Pro, and Signify has not disclosed a launch date.

The new capability would build on an existing but narrower partnership. Philips Hue and Sonos already support voice-based lighting control, with both companies saying a Hue Bridge is required for the current integration. Philips Hue’s own Sonos pages describe the collaboration as a way to control lights and scenes through Sonos Voice Control, while Sonos support documentation explains that users must link the two apps, have a configured Hue Bridge on the network and set up Sonos Voice Control on a compatible speaker.
