Plugable’s UD-MSTH3 revolutionises multi-monitor setups with driver-free triple HDMI support

Plugable’s UD-MSTH3 offers a cost-effective, driver-free solution for turning a single USB-C connection into a versatile desktop with three HDMI outputs, transforming multi-monitor productivity for Windows and Linux users.

Plugable’s UD-MSTH3 is aimed at a very specific but growing need: turning a single USB-C connection into a full desktop setup with multiple displays and a broad spread of peripheral ports. According to How-To Geek’s review, the dock avoids the usual trade-off between driver-dependent DisplayLink units and pricier Thunderbolt models by relying on Multi-Stream Transport, a display feature built into Windows, ChromeOS and many Linux distributions. Plugable says the dock is designed for Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and systems with USB-C, USB4 or Thunderbolt video output, while Mac and ARM-based systems are not recommended for the triple-display feature.

The hardware itself is more substantial than many docks in its price bracket. How-To Geek described the chassis as metal with plastic end caps, noting that the unit felt solid, stayed warm rather than hot in use, and could stand upright or lie flat on rubber feet. Plugable’s product information lists 15 ports in total, including three HDMI outputs, two 10Gbps USB-C ports, four USB-A ports, SD and microSD card readers, a 2.5Gbps Ethernet port, a combination audio jack, and a 100W upstream USB-C connection for the host computer. The dock also includes a 30W USB-C charging port on the front for accessories or phones.

In practical testing, the review found the dock capable of handling a fairly busy desk setup, with monitors, phones, input devices, storage and Ethernet all operating at the same time. The main limitation was not the hub’s port selection but the host system’s video capability. Plugable says the dock can support two 4K displays at 60Hz, or a mixed triple-display setup such as one 4K panel at 60Hz and two 1080p screens at 60Hz. How-To Geek found that three 1440p monitors ran at 100Hz, but could not all sustain their maximum 144Hz refresh rate. Plugable’s own support notes say full 4K triple-display operation depends on the computer’s DisplayPort and Display Stream Compression support, and that some configurations may fall back to lower refresh rates.

Compatibility remains the key deciding factor. How-To Geek reported that the dock worked with a Linux laptop running Kubuntu, despite Linux not being the primary target platform, which suggests broader support where the underlying hardware cooperates. By contrast, the review said Macs cannot properly use the MST-based triple-monitor function, and that older PCs or Snapdragon-based Windows machines are less convincing candidates because the headline display feature may not be available. At a price of around $150, the UD-MSTH3 appears best suited to users who can actually exploit the three HDMI outputs, rather than anyone simply looking for a generic USB-C hub.
