Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 transforms wearables with on-device AI and premium audio features

The new Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 platform sets a new benchmark for audio wearables by integrating advanced AI, extended connectivity, and high-fidelity sound, paving the way for smarter, more context-aware devices.

Qualcomm has unveiled the Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 platform, a new audio architecture it says is meant to fuse premium sound and voice features with on-device intelligence and connectivity for agent-led experiences. The company is positioning it as a foundation for a broader class of wearables, including camera-enabled earbuds, audio glasses and other multimodal devices that can do more than play music or handle calls.

According to Qualcomm, the platform is built for what it calls Personal AI, with hearables expected to act more like adaptive companions than simple accessories. The chipmaker says the new design combines local processing with cloud-connected intelligence through integrated micro-power Wi-Fi, allowing devices to support services and assistants that can evolve over time. It is part of a wider push to make audio wearables more context-aware and responsive to the listener’s surroundings.

On the technical side, Qualcomm says the new platform delivers up to twice the AI compute performance of its predecessor, while cutting power use by as much as 40% and reducing the chip footprint by up to 30%. That should help future earbuds and related devices run multiple intelligent tasks at once rather than handling them one after another, a shift that could matter for features such as translation, transcription and live assistant interactions.

The audio stack also remains central. Qualcomm says Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 includes aptX Lossless for higher-fidelity wireless playback, XPAN for extended Bluetooth range, and a fifth-generation active noise cancellation system. It also supports advanced multi-microphone designs, cVc voice clarity technology and the Snapdragon Audio Sense solution, which are intended to improve both speech capture and environmental awareness. Qualcomm says it is also offering reference designs to speed up prototyping, testing and commercialisation for device makers.
