Samsung’s 1TB SSD 990 has fallen to $200 on Amazon, according to PC Guide, marking a new low for a drive that sits in the middle of the company’s current PCIe 4.0 range. The discount narrows the gap with more affordable rivals while keeping Samsung’s premium branding and software support in view for buyers who want a known name rather than the cheapest option available.
The appeal of the 990 lies in its balance rather than outright speed leadership. Samsung rates the 1TB model at up to 7,150MB/s for reads and 6,450MB/s for writes, figures that put it close to the higher-spec 990 Pro while keeping power use lower. Samsung has said the drive can deliver up to 38% better performance per watt than the 990 Pro, which makes it attractive for compact desktops, gaming systems and general-purpose upgrades where efficiency matters as much as peak throughput.
Independent reviews have broadly backed that positioning. PCWorld found the drive’s sequential read speed was strong in practice, but noted that sustained write performance weakened once the cache was exhausted. StorageServer similarly described the 990 as a value-focused PCIe 4.0 SSD, with the 1TB version rated at 400TBW endurance. Tom’s Hardware also highlighted Samsung’s choice of a single-sided M.2 2280 design, which can help compatibility in thinner systems and laptops.
There are still trade-offs. Tom’s Hardware has warned that counterfeit Samsung SSDs have become a real problem, making reputable retailers and verification tools such as Samsung Magician important for buyers. Even so, the 990’s current price places it in an unusual position: cheaper than Samsung’s own Pro and Evo alternatives, close to some budget contenders, and still backed by the company’s stronger reputation for consistency and support.
