Samsung has launched its new P7 and P9 external SSDs, offering USB4 speeds up to 4,000 MB/s and 8TB capacity, targeting creators needing fast transfer for large media files and demanding workflows.
Samsung has expanded its portable storage range with the P7 and P9, two external SSDs aimed at creators who need faster transfers for large image and video files. The company says both drives use USB4 and are available in capacities from 1TB to 8TB, positioning them for workflows that involve high-resolution stills, 4K footage and other heavy media files. According to Samsung, the aim is to make ingest, backup and editing less time-consuming for users working on location or in the field.
The P9 is the more capable model in the line-up. Samsung says it is designed for sustained performance and more demanding production work, including 12K direct recording. It offers sequential read speeds of up to 4,000 MB/s and write speeds of up to 3,800 MB/s, and is described as the first 8TB portable SSD to deliver those figures over USB4. Industry coverage of the launch also notes that the drive adds stronger thermal control and vibration resistance for heavier professional use.
The P7 is pitched as the lighter, more everyday option. Samsung says it combines the same USB4 interface and similar headline speeds with a more travel-friendly design, while also offering drop resistance of up to 6.6 feet. For photographers and hybrid creators, that matters as much as raw throughput: a portable drive has to survive bags, desks and shooting locations as well as deliver fast copies.
The launch also reflects how portable storage is being shaped by the wider shift towards larger files and more demanding workflows. Samsung says the new drives are intended not only for photographers and videographers, but also for AI content creators and gamers handling larger libraries. Compared with the older T9, which tops out at 2,000 MB/s on USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, the new models move Samsung’s portable range into a much faster category.
