SanDisk introduces the Optimus GX7100M, a compact PCIe 4.0 SSD in the small 2230 format that rivals larger drives in speed, offering a potent upgrade for handheld gaming devices and slim laptops despite its high price.
SanDisk’s Optimus GX7100M is a clear sign that 2230-size SSDs have moved beyond compromise. In a small M.2 form factor aimed at handheld gaming devices and ultra-thin laptops, it delivers the sort of sequential speed that was once reserved for much larger desktop drives. Trusted Reviews found that the 2TB version posted very strong file-copy results and solid game-loading times, while PCWorld said its 2TB model outpaced every PCIe 4.0 SSD it had tested. SanDisk positions the drive for handhelds such as the Steam Deck, along with compact laptops and other space-constrained systems.
The drive uses PCIe 4.0 x4 and comes in 1TB and 2TB capacities. According to SanDisk, it can reach up to 7,250MB/s for reads and 6,900MB/s for writes, and it uses the company’s nCache 4.0 technology. The compact 2230 length is the main appeal here: it allows the SSD to fit devices that cannot accept a standard 2280 drive. That makes it a practical upgrade path for portable gaming hardware, even though the format limits available capacity and leaves little room for extras such as a DRAM cache.
That lack of DRAM is not unusual in this class, with SanDisk relying on HMB, or host memory buffer, which uses system memory rather than dedicated onboard cache. Trusted Reviews said that the Optimus GX7100M’s sequential performance was excellent, but its random 4K results and PCMark 10 scores were less impressive than some rivals. Dong Knows Tech also praised the 2TB model as one of the fastest PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSDs it had tested, while noting that operating temperatures remained comparatively low. In practice, the drive appears tuned more for fast transfers and game loads than for broad all-round workstation use.
Price is the main obstacle. Trusted Reviews described the 2TB sample as very expensive, with a UK price of £402.99 and a US price of $449.99 at the time of review. SanDisk’s five-year warranty and endurance rating of 1,200TBW for the 2TB model offer some reassurance, but the value case remains weak versus larger and often cheaper M.2 2280 alternatives. For buyers who specifically need top-tier storage in a 2230 slot, however, the Optimus GX7100M looks like one of the strongest options available.
