Sonos has introduced a major update that transforms portable speakers into temporary rear surrounds, leveraging AI and new system features to enhance home cinema flexibility and control.
Sonos has pushed its software platform further into home cinema territory with Sonos 27, a system update that lets selected portable speakers act as temporary rear surrounds when placed behind a sofa. The company says the feature uses its Positioning Technology to detect where a speaker is located and automatically change its role within the setup.
According to Sonos, the new Portable Surrounds mode works with a pair of compatible portable speakers and a supported soundbar. In practice, that means owners can use speakers such as the Move 2 away from the theatre room, then return them to the same space and have them rejoin the surround system without rebuilding the setup.
The update is part of a broader release that Sonos says also brings AI control through multiple assistants and agents, along with a more streamlined app experience. Sonos has also introduced headphone linking, which will let compatible headphones connect directly to the wider Sonos system, beginning with Sonos Ace Ultra. The company says Sonos 27 is a free update for Sonos S2 products, although not every feature is available on every device.
Support material from Sonos says the Portable Surrounds feature requires a pair of matching supported portable speakers and one of its newer soundbars, including the Arc, Arc Ultra, Beam Gen 2 or Beam Ultra. The system is designed to bond the speakers automatically when they are placed in the same room as the home cinema product, then revert them to standalone use when moved elsewhere.
The update reflects a wider shift in Sonos’ software strategy. What was once presented primarily as speaker firmware is now being framed more like an operating system for connected audio, with product categories increasingly linked through software rather than fixed hardware roles. That approach could reduce the need for dedicated rear speakers, although only households already using the right Sonos hardware will be able to take advantage of the new flexibility.
