Designed for videographers and field shooters, TeamGroup’s CinemaPr P31 offers rugged portability and strong short-burst performance, but its sustained write speeds limit long-recording workflows for the 1TB model.
TeamGroup’s T-CREATE CinemaPr P31 is not a conventional portable SSD dressed up for video work. It is a storage device built around the practical demands of camera rigs: a compact aluminium enclosure, multiple 1/4-inch mounting points, and a short USB-C cable intended to keep cable runs tidy on set. The 1TB version reviewed here is the most modest model in the range, but it still targets creators who need fast ingest, rugged handling and simple rig integration rather than headline-grabbing synthetic benchmarks. According to the review material from PCWorld, PC-WELT and B&H Photo, the product is positioned squarely at videographers and field shooters, with an IP67-rated body and support for recording workflows up to 8K.
The performance picture is more nuanced. In the detailed igor’sLAB test, the drive exceeded the advertised read speed, reaching 1,099.11 MB/s in sequential reads over a 10 Gbit/s USB link, while writes peaked at 1,024.26 MB/s in short bursts. That level of throughput is strong for the class, but the same test also showed that the advantage fades once the drive’s pSLC cache is exhausted. After roughly 33.8 GB of writes, sustained speed fell to about 354 MB/s and then remained stable over a much larger span. The reviewer found no meaningful thermal throttling, with temperatures staying between 30°C and 38°C under load.
That sustained-write behaviour is the key practical limit. For ordinary camera-offload use, the P31 is quick and consistent, and its read performance remains close to maximum across the full capacity. But for long continuous recording, the post-cache write rate matters more than the burst figure, and the 1TB model is not well suited to codecs that demand far more than 350 MB/s for extended periods. The igor’sLAB test also found that the drive’s performance did not materially improve with compressible data, which suggests there is little hidden advantage from file type alone. By contrast, the 4TB version is specified differently by TeamGroup and by resellers, with a much faster claimed top-end rate, so the product family should not be treated as a single uniform platform.
The P31’s internal architecture is also unusual. The igor’sLAB analysis found that ATA identify and SMART data could be read over USB, but the returned information did not map cleanly to a standard SATA device. That led the reviewer to describe the unit as more likely to use an integrated USB-to-NAND design with an emulation layer than a simple SATA SSD behind a bridge chip. The exact controller and NAND type were not identified. Even so, the conclusion is straightforward: this is a well-built creator-focused portable SSD with strong short-burst performance, good sustained reads and a very usable mounting system, but buyers planning long, continuous writes should base their choice on the post-cache figure rather than the marketing maximum.
