Xiaomi has opened reservations for its first network-attached storage device, the Xiaomi Smart Storage, offering a cost-effective alternative to rivals with enhanced hardware specifications and local media capabilities, ahead of wider release in China.
Xiaomi has moved its first network-attached storage device closer to retail, opening reservations on JD.com for the Xiaomi Smart Storage ahead of wider availability in China. According to TechRadar, the reservation period runs from 27 August to 26 September 2026, after an earlier crowdfunding phase. The three bundled configurations are priced at CNY 2,699 for 4TB, CNY 3,499 for 8TB and CNY 5,499 for 16TB. That makes the upper model notably cheaper per terabyte than many rival consumer NAS bundles, at least on a direct currency comparison.
The hardware is modest rather than ambitious, but it is better specified than some entry-level rivals. Reporting from GizmoChina and other launch coverage says the unit uses a Realtek RTD1619B quad-core ARM Cortex-A55 processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of built-in storage and two SATA bays for 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch drives. Connectivity includes 2.5-gigabit Ethernet, HDMI and USB-A, while the chassis measures 200.5 x 85 x 161 mm and weighs about 2.3 kg.
The choice of processor is unsurprising: the same Realtek platform appeared in Synology’s DS223 range in 2023. The difference is in the surrounding specification. Synology’s entry models came with less memory and only single-gigabit networking, whereas Xiaomi adds more RAM, faster networking and an HDMI output. That should make the device more attractive to buyers who want a small all-in-one box for file storage and local media playback, not just backup duties.
There are still limits. Xiaomi says the Smart Storage supports up to 60TB, or two 30TB drives, which is lower than some competing products that advertise far larger ceilings on similar hardware. Xiaomi also sells a companion uninterruptible power supply accessory for CNY 349. For now, however, the biggest unknown remains software: independent reviews have yet to test Xiaomi’s interface, app support and update policy in practice.
