Evidence from Chromium code suggests Google and partners are developing a diverse range of Snapdragon X2-powered devices, signalling a shift to a broader Chromebook ecosystem tailored for various performance and price points.
Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon X2 chips appear to be heading for more than a single showcase device, with Chromium code now indicating that Google is preparing multiple hardware variants under its Calypso platform. Chrome Unboxed, which first flagged the firmware change in Google’s repositories, says the latest Depthcharge commit suggests a broader family of Snapdragon X2-based Googlebooks rather than one reference model.
Depthcharge is the early bootloader component used by ChromeOS and Aluminium OS to initialise hardware before the operating system starts. In practice, new SKU entries in that layer allow the same base design to recognise different motherboard configurations and apply the right power, display and memory settings. That is usually a strong sign that a platform is being split across several devices, not simply one laptop with minor regional differences.
The software groundwork also fits with Qualcomm’s own product strategy. At CES 2026, Qualcomm expanded the Snapdragon X2 Plus range with two official Windows SKUs: the X2P-64-100 and the X2P-42-100. Tom’s Hardware reported that both chips use Qualcomm’s Oryon architecture, are built on TSMC’s N3P process, and carry an NPU rated at 80 TOPS, while targeting different balance points between performance and efficiency. That mirrors the tiering already seen in the Snapdragon X2 Elite family, where Notebookcheck lists several variants from the X2E-80-100 through to the faster X2E-88-100 and X2E-90-100, each with different core counts, clocks and memory bandwidth.
Taken together, the evidence points to Google and its manufacturing partners preparing a wider Snapdragon X2 laptop line-up, potentially across both premium and thinner, lower-power machines. The likely outcome is a fleet of devices built from the same reference architecture but tuned for different price bands and use cases, with some models aimed at high-end consumer systems and others prioritising battery life and fanless designs. For ChromeOS and Googlebook buyers, that would mark a more mature hardware ecosystem than the single-device launch pattern often seen in earlier Chromebook generations.
