The Indian government has introduced comprehensive overhauls to e-commerce regulations, targeting pricing, search rankings, sponsored listings, and consumer complaints to promote greater transparency online, set to take effect from January 2027.
India’s consumer affairs department has overhauled the rules governing e-commerce platforms, setting out new obligations on pricing, search rankings, sponsored listings and complaints handling in a bid to make online shopping more transparent. The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) (Amendment) Rules, 2026, were notified by the Department of Consumer Affairs and are due to take effect on 1 January 2027, according to a government release and reports by Indian publications.
