Nvidia deepens its commitment to custom AI hardware with a $3.5 billion deal with MediaTek, integrating Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion technology to expand beyond traditional data centre markets and challenge competitors like AMD and Qualcomm.
Nvidia is deepening its push into custom artificial intelligence hardware with a $3.5 billion investment in MediaTek, a deal that gives the Taiwanese chip designer access to Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion interconnect technology, according to reporting by Tom’s Hardware and TechCrunch. The arrangement is designed to help MediaTek build processors for AI companies and cloud providers that can sit alongside Nvidia hardware in the same rack-scale systems.
NVLink Fusion is the key element in the partnership. It allows chips from different makers to exchange data at high speed, making it easier for customers to combine their own processors with Nvidia-based infrastructure, according to Ferra and other industry reports. That matters as large cloud operators increasingly want bespoke silicon for specific workloads, while still relying on Nvidia’s broader software and infrastructure stack.
The agreement also appears to extend Nvidia’s ecosystem beyond the data centre. Investing.com and GamesBeat reported that the collaboration spans data centres, personal computers, edge devices and vehicles, with MediaTek’s system-on-chip design expertise complementing Nvidia’s accelerated computing and graphics platforms. The move also places fresh pressure on AMD and Qualcomm as more hyperscalers pursue their own chips.
The investment underscores a wider shift in the AI hardware market. TechCrunch reported that Nvidia’s strategy is not simply to defend its GPU business, but to make itself the central platform for custom silicon built by others. That approach could help Nvidia keep control of the infrastructure layer even as major customers, including cloud groups, design more of their own processors.
