Samsung Electronics is expanding its use of external manufacturers for DDR5 modules, reallocating internal resources to focus on high-bandwidth memory for AI systems, with Philippines-based SFA Semicon playing a key role in this strategic shift.
Samsung Electronics is widening its use of outside manufacturers for DDR5 memory modules as it concentrates more of its own capacity on high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, the premium chip stack used in artificial intelligence systems. Reports from South Korea say the company is shifting standard memory production away from its factories and towards partners across Asia, marking a further reallocation of resources towards higher-margin products.
In the Philippines, SFA Semicon Philippines in Clark, Pampanga is expected to become a key site in that network. Industry reports say Samsung is moving equipment from its Onyang campus in South Korea to the plant, where final assembly and testing of DDR5 modules is due to begin in November, with a second phase planned next year. The DRAM chips themselves will still be produced in Samsung’s own fabrication plants abroad, while partner sites handle the last stage of production before shipment.
Samsung is also said to be working with Dreamtech in India and Hanyang Digitech in Vietnam, as well as SFA Semicon in the Philippines, to increase external DDR5 output more quickly. According to industry reports, the aim is to free up internal lines for HBM and related advanced packaging, which are more closely tied to demand from AI accelerators and carry stronger margins than conventional memory products.
The move could strengthen the Philippines’ role in Samsung’s supply chain and bring a sizeable lift to SFA Semicon’s business. One market report projects operating profit of 78.5 billion won in 2027 and says monthly test revenue could rise sharply as the expanded line ramps up. The broader picture is clear: Samsung appears to be treating standard DDR5 as a volume business best handled by partners, while reserving its own factories for the more profitable AI memory market.
