The global semiconductor industry has hit a new high, surpassing $1.6 trillion in 2026, fueled by unprecedented demand for AI infrastructure and memory products, marking a shift from cyclical recovery to sustained expansion.
Global semiconductor sales reached $159.7 billion in August 2026, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association, extending a run of monthly gains and pushing year-to-date revenue above $1 trillion for the first time. The figure was 8% higher than July’s $147.9 billion and far above the $65.4 billion recorded in August 2025, underscoring how sharply the market has expanded over the past year.
The association said the industry has now posted 18 consecutive months of year-on-year growth, with demand across the Americas, Asia Pacific and China doing most of the heavy lifting. Michael Robbins, the SIA’s president and chief executive, said annual sales had already passed the $1 trillion mark through August and said the sector was on course for further expansion in 2026. The SIA has projected full-year sales will exceed $1.6 trillion.
Regional data show how broad the upswing has become. Year-on-year sales in August rose 180.9% in the Americas, 143.0% in Asia Pacific and other markets, 131.3% in China, 98.5% in Europe and 62.3% in Japan. Month-on-month growth was also positive in every major region, led by Asia Pacific and other markets at 9.1%, Japan at 8.5% and the Americas at 8.2%.
Independent forecasts point to the same conclusion: the boom is being driven largely by AI infrastructure and associated memory demand. Gartner said in August that worldwide semiconductor revenue is headed for $1.6 trillion in 2026, citing sustained investment in AI data centres and a stronger memory pricing cycle. Industry coverage has likewise linked the surge to accelerators, high-bandwidth memory, networking gear and storage, while manufacturers such as TSMC have reported record monthly revenue as AI-related orders continue to build. The result is a market that appears to be shifting from cyclical recovery to a more durable phase of expansion.
