The highly anticipated Sony FX5 cinema camera faces delayed shipments until September following overwhelming pre-order demand, production setbacks from an earthquake, and undisclosed quality-control issues, disrupting the launch of this flagship full-frame device.
Sony’s FX5 cinema camera, one of the year’s most closely watched launches in the compact full-frame class, is now expected to miss its original August 18 shipping date and reach customers in September after a series of setbacks disrupted the rollout. Digital Camera World reported that pre-orders in Japan sold out within 24 hours, underlining demand that has already strained Sony’s fulfilment plans. The camera was introduced on July 22 with a body-only price of $4,899.99 and a planned mid-August release.
The earliest sign of trouble came when Sony Japan said on July 28 that orders had far exceeded expectations and warned that delivery delays were likely. News Shooter reported that the company said it was doing its utmost to satisfy customers and asked for patience. No Film School likewise said Sony had received significantly more orders than anticipated, reinforcing the view that the launch has been overwhelmed by demand rather than simple scheduling slippage.
That pressure was compounded by external disruption in Kumamoto Prefecture, where Sony Semiconductor Solutions operates its Kumamoto Technology Centre, the company’s largest image-sensor plant. Digital Camera World reported that production there was paused for several days after a 7.1 earthquake on July 28 and restarted on August 4. While there has been no official confirmation that FX5 sensor output was directly affected, the timing raises the likelihood of knock-on delays for a camera built around Sony’s 16.6-megapixel Exmor RS CMOS sensor.
The latest complication is a reported quality-control issue. Canon Rumors said it heard from two sources that an unspecified QC problem had to be resolved before more units left dealer stock rooms. Retail listings now reflect the delay: B&H has moved the FX5 to September, while Adorama is showing September 15, 2026. SonyAlphaRumors has also published emails from German retailers referring to a “final quality adjustment” before shipment and saying availability is expected in early September. Taken together, the reports suggest the delay is now real on both sides of the Atlantic, even if the precise nature of the defect remains unclear.
