As 5G becomes mainstream, battery concerns persist due to increased power demands, but advancements in hardware and network design are reducing the impact for modern smartphones.
As 5G becomes standard on more smartphones, battery life remains one of the main concerns for users. The short answer is that fifth-generation mobile service can draw more power than 4G, but the size of the difference depends on signal quality, network design, the handset itself and the modem inside it.
The biggest drain usually appears on non-standalone 5G networks, where the phone may use 5G for data while still leaning on 4G for parts of the connection. That means the device is effectively juggling two radio systems at once. Standalone 5G, by contrast, can be more efficient because it does not rely in the same way on LTE.
Signal strength is just as important. When coverage is weak or unstable, the phone works harder to hold on to the connection and to search for a usable mast, which increases power use. Articles from ScienceInsights and Android Authority note that this is one of the main reasons battery drain can feel worse in some places even on relatively new devices.
The hardware generation matters too. Early 5G phones often used separate modems, which increased power consumption. More recent handsets use more integrated chips and better modem design, narrowing the gap with 4G. Even so, Batteries Plus says 5G still uses roughly 6% to 11% more battery than 4G LTE on average, while a separate report quoting Xiaomi executive Lu Weibing put the figure at about 20% for some devices and chipsets.
For users trying to stretch battery life, switching to 4G can still make sense in areas with poor 5G reception or when top speeds are unnecessary. Where 5G coverage is strong, the difference may be modest enough that leaving it switched on is not a major penalty. Wi-Fi usually remains the most economical option for heavy data use, especially when the router is nearby.
