Buyer beware: essential checks for purchasing a used electric vehicle

Consumers looking to buy a second-hand electric car must scrutinise battery condition, charging systems and repair histories to ensure they get true value, experts warn.

A used electric car can be a smart buy, but only if the battery, charging system and history are checked properly before money changes hands. The headline price may look attractive, yet the real value depends on factors that are easy to miss in a short viewing: how much usable battery capacity remains, whether the car charges as it should, and whether any earlier repair work has been properly documented.

The first issue is battery health. The percentage shown on the dashboard tells you how full the battery is at that moment, not how much of its original capacity it can still hold. That distinction matters because a battery can still reach 100% charge while storing less energy than it did when new. Industry guides from Autofindr and AutoEdgeView both stress the importance of the State of Health figure, or SoH, which gives a clearer picture of long-term battery condition than a simple charge read-out.

A proper assessment should include a recent written report with the date, mileage and vehicle identification number. The number alone is not enough; it also matters how it was measured. DEKRA has noted in its own services that there is a difference between a basic estimate from the battery management system and a test carried out with independent measurements. In practice, that means a seller who simply says the battery is at 92% is not giving enough evidence on its own. The figure should be judged against the car’s age, model and expected degradation, then used as part of the price discussion rather than as a blanket reassurance.

Warranty terms deserve close reading. A claim that the battery has eight years of cover may sound generous, but the useful questions are when the warranty started, how many kilometres remain, what level of capacity loss is covered and under what conditions a claim can be made. For imported cars in particular, buyers should ask the official dealer network to confirm the exact coverage for that specific chassis number. Tesla has said on its own site that warranty information can be model-specific and that the terms originally supplied with the vehicle are decisive.

Charging should be tested in real conditions, not assumed from the brochure. Recharged and Consumer Reports both recommend charging the vehicle during inspection to make sure it starts, continues and ends correctly, without warning messages or lock-up issues with the cable. If the car supports both AC and DC charging, both should be checked. The charge port, flap and cables also need inspection for wear, corrosion or damage, because charging hardware is part of the purchase, not an accessory.

A lift inspection is equally important. An experienced workshop should examine the underside of the car and the battery casing for impact marks, deformation, leaks or evidence of previous repairs. A tidy bodywork finish tells you little about whether the car has suffered an underbody strike. If the seller says the battery has been repaired or replaced, the buyer should ask for invoices and details of who carried out the work, when it was done and what warranty, if any, still applies. A documented repair may be acceptable; an unsupported story shifts the risk to the next owner.

Range also needs to be tested against the buyer’s own use. A car that looks adequate on paper may perform very differently on motorways, in cold weather or with heating and air conditioning running. Autotrader and Consumer Reports both note that age, climate and charging habits affect real-world range, so a short urban drive is not enough. Before paying a deposit, the buyer should have a clear battery report, a written understanding of warranty status, an estimate of any repair costs and confirmation of which cables, keys and app access will be handed over. If the seller will not allow an independent inspection or will not document the battery’s condition, the low price is not a sufficient reason to proceed.

That is why a controlled battery test is more useful than kilometre readings alone. The audit carried out on an Audi Q4 e-tron after 100,000 kilometres, which recorded battery health at 94%, is a useful reminder that some used EVs retain strong condition well into ownership. The point is not that every car will perform the same way, but that buyers should ask for evidence rather than rely on assumptions. In the used EV market, the right paperwork can matter as much as the right price.
