Households using solar power are reminded that regular cleaning, monitoring, and professional servicing are essential to ensure optimal performance and safety when managing solar and battery systems, especially in demanding environments.
Solar power can lower household bills, especially when paired with a battery, but it is not a fit-and-forget investment. In Canberra and elsewhere, owners are being reminded that a system works best when it is kept clean, checked regularly and monitored for signs of trouble.
Lee Hindley, co-director of Huglo Solar, said panels mounted at an angle will often shed dirt with rainfall, but dust, wind and flat roofs can leave grime behind. He said households should inspect arrays every few months for debris, droppings, nesting birds, overgrown vegetation and any visible damage or discolouration, all of which can affect output. Government guidance from the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources and Solar Victoria also stresses that dirt and buildup can reduce efficiency and that visual checks are an important part of routine care.
Monitoring is another key part of keeping a system in good shape. Most setups now include a display, website or smartphone app that shows generation, usage, battery charging and discharging, plus fault or error messages. Hindley said homeowners should spend a few minutes each week reviewing that data and using it to time energy use for when the system is producing most strongly, while federal guidance says owners should watch for underperformance and investigate if figures do not look right.
Regular servicing matters as well. Hindley said a solar system should be checked by an accredited electrician or solar installer, who can test electrical parts, examine the structure and confirm the array is generating as expected. Industry guides from Solar Victoria, Solar Calculator Agent, Why Solar and Queensland’s Electrical Safety Office all say licensed professionals should handle electrical work, while routine inspections can help spot problems such as microcracks, inverter faults, bird activity or weather-related wear before they become costly.
Safety remains the central rule. Hindley warned against opening or repairing any part of a solar or battery system without the right qualifications, noting that the equipment uses high-voltage DC cabling and can be dangerous. In the ACT, Evoenergy also requires a five-year anti-islanding test, which checks that an inverter shuts down quickly during a grid outage and restarts only after power returns, helping protect line workers and other technicians.
