Microsoft’s support guidance says Windows Backup can save files, themes, settings, installed apps and Wi‑Fi details, provided the user signs in with a Microsoft account and selects the folders to protect. Other options remain available too, including manual copying to an external hard drive or USB stick, or syncing important folders through cloud services such as Google Drive, Dropbox or Proton Drive.
When resetting from Windows itself, the system offers two broad paths. One keeps personal files while removing installed programmes, which is useful when the operating system is unstable but documents still need to be preserved. The other removes everything, including personal data, and is better suited to a full wipe before the computer changes hands. Canaltech also notes two installation modes: a cloud download, which fetches the latest Windows 11 build, and a local reinstall that uses files already on the device.
For machines that need a deeper clean, a bootable USB remains the more forceful option. Canaltech says the process requires at least an 8 GB flash drive, Microsoft’s installation media tool and access to the computer’s boot menu, which may be triggered by keys such as F2, F12 or Delete depending on the manufacturer. The method erases the drive and reinstalls Windows from scratch, so it is more technical and best used when the built-in recovery tools fail.
After the reset, Windows may still need driver updates, app reinstallations and restoration of files from backup. Microsoft and other how-to guides also advise checking that the machine is connected to the internet for activation, and that users relying on the cloud download option have a stable connection because the download time affects the overall process.
Canaltech says the Windows 11 licence is usually tied to the Microsoft account or the device hardware, so activation should return automatically after reinstalling. It also notes that Windows 10 support ended in October 2025, which leaves the older system exposed to greater security risk for anyone still using it.
