New footage in macOS Tahoe hints that Apple may still be working on AirPods with built-in cameras, even as recent reports indicate the project has been paused, keeping future plans shrouded in speculation.
Apple may have revealed, by accident, that it is still working on AirPods with built-in cameras, even as separate reports suggest the project has been paused. A video found in the Release Candidate build of macOS Tahoe 26.7 appears to show the earbuds in use, with the system pointing to a forthcoming Visual Intelligence feature for the AirPods themselves, according to MacRumors and Canaltech.
In the clip, a user holds a book in front of the headphones while the camera identifies it, suggesting that the earbuds could one day feed visual information to Siri and help the assistant answer questions about nearby objects. The system files also refer directly to Visual Intelligence settings for AirPods, which implies the feature is more than an early concept and may already be wired into Apple’s software work.
MacRumors reported in May that AirPods Pro with cameras had reached advanced testing, with design and feature decisions close to final. That report said the cameras would support awareness of the wearer’s surroundings and that a small indicator light would show when the cameras were active. More recent commentary from T3 and MacRumors suggested the device could arrive in a later wave of AI-focused hardware, possibly in 2027, and may even be marketed under a different name.
There is, however, a clear counterpoint. In early July, TUAW, AppleInsider and AppleWorld.today all cited leaker Kosutami as saying development had been suspended, although no reason was given and Apple has not confirmed any delay. The new macOS footage does not resolve that contradiction, but it does indicate that Apple has at least prepared software hooks for a camera-equipped AirPods product, keeping the project very much in public view.
