Lexar introduces the Muse, a groundbreaking ultra-slim portable SSD designed for mobile creators, featuring a unique magnetic pogo-pin system and support for 4K ProRes recording, as it celebrates its 30th anniversary.
Lexar has introduced the Muse, a portable SSD it says is the thinnest of its kind, unveiling the device at IFA Berlin 2026 as part of its 30th anniversary plans. The company is pitching it at mobile creators and videographers who want high-speed external storage in a form factor closer to a credit card than a conventional drive.
The Muse’s appeal is its size. Lexar says the metal body measures 80 x 48 mm and is 3.8 mm thick at its centre, tapering to 1 mm at the edges. That is unusually slim for a portable SSD, and the company has used a single-piece metal shell with no visible screws or joins to reach the design.
To keep the drive this thin, Lexar has replaced a standard USB-C socket with a proprietary magnetic pogo-pin system. The bundled SnapLink cable attaches with neodymium magnets, while a MagSafe-compatible sleeve lets the SSD mount to the back of recent iPhones. Lexar says the drive can support direct recording of Apple ProRes 4K video at up to 120 frames per second on compatible models.
Performance is rated at up to 1,050MB/s for reads and 1,000MB/s for writes, according to Lexar. The company says the metal casing also helps dissipate heat without a fan. The Muse will ship in 512GB and 1TB versions from the fourth quarter of 2026, although Lexar has not yet announced pricing.
Industry reaction has been mixed. While the design has drawn attention for its extreme thinness and mobile-friendly mounting options, some reviewers have questioned the practicality of a proprietary connector that adds another cable and accessory to carry. Even so, the Muse shows how storage vendors are increasingly tailoring products to smartphone-based workflows rather than only to laptops and desktops.
