The announcement signals a shift away from the familiar plug-in model towards a more integrated colour workflow, with the aim of preserving creative intent across the production chain.
According to the companies, the new approach is designed to let editors work in Media Composer while viewing a more accurate representation of the finished look, rather than treating colour as a later, separate stage. FilmLight’s Baselight system will remain the specialist environment for professional colourists, but the collaboration is meant to allow decisions made in editorial to stay visible and usable as projects move through review, grading, finishing and delivery.
Avid said the partnership will focus on four areas: native colour tools inside Media Composer, a connected path from dailies to delivery, broader access to FilmLight’s colour science at editorial level, and workflow options that scale from simple delivery tasks to renderless round-trips with full Baselight for high-end finishing. In practical terms, that could reduce the number of exports, conforms and handoffs that often slow post-production and create room for mismatched colour decisions.
Jai Cave, technical operations director at ENVY Post Production, welcomed the move, saying Media Composer and Baselight have sat at the centre of the company’s workflow for more than 20 years. He said closer alignment between editorial and grade could bring real workflow benefits as productions handle more formats and increasingly complex on-set, VFX and finishing requirements. The partnership builds on the Baselight Editions workflow already available today, but points towards a deeper native integration in future.
