Bose updates open-ear earbuds with improved sound, battery life, and fitness features

Bose has launched new clip-on open-ear earbuds designed for active individuals, featuring enhanced sound quality, longer battery life, and specialised fitness features, while maintaining situational awareness.

Bose has expanded its open-ear range with two new clip-on earbuds that leave the ear canal uncovered, a design aimed at keeping listeners aware of traffic, voices and other ambient sound while still playing music, podcasts and calls. The new line comprises the Sport Open Earbuds and the second-generation Ultra Open Earbuds, both of which Bose says are built around its OpenAudio approach rather than bone conduction. According to Bose and reviews of the launch, the idea is to project sound towards the ear while limiting leakage for people nearby.

The premium Ultra Open model is the headline update. Bose says the second generation brings clearer calls, stronger bass, louder playback and up to nine hours of battery life, with a further 19.5 hours from the charging case. The company has also added a Cinema Mode using its TrueSpatial processing for wider-sounding video and podcast playback, while Android users on compatible devices can tap into Snapdragon Sound with aptX Adaptive. TechRadar and What Hi-Fi both note that the design keeps the familiar cuff-like shape, but with refinements to grip, charging and overall refinement.

The Sport Open Earbuds are pitched more directly at runners and gym users. Bose says the silicone-coated C-shaped frame is intended to stay secure during movement, and the earbuds carry an IP54 rating for resistance to sweat, splashes and dust. Battery life is rated at seven hours, with another 22 hours from the case. Physical buttons replace touch panels, a choice that should make them easier to use with sweaty hands.

Both models support Bluetooth 5.4, multipoint pairing, SBC and AAC, Google Fast Pair and Bose’s SpeechClarity system for calls. The Bose app adds a three-band equaliser, Auto Volume control and device management, with future support promised for Google Find Hub, Alexa+ and an Apple Music shortcut. Bose says the earbuds go on pre-order on 19 September and on sale from 1 October, although some retail coverage has separately suggested the Sport model may arrive later in October. Bose has not yet confirmed Brazilian pricing or local availability.
