The KNX Association has launched Standard v3.0.5, introducing major updates for lighting, remote access, and IoT integration, aimed at streamlining development, ensuring security, and improving device interoperability within the smart building industry.
KNX Association has released Standard v3.0.5, adding new functions for lighting, remote access and KNX IoT while tightening the technical framework for manufacturers. According to the association, the update is designed to make development and certification simpler, improve interoperability between KNX Classic and KNX IoT devices, and shorten the route from specification to market.
The biggest change for lighting is the move to HSV-based colour control. That approach lets manufacturers handle hue, saturation and brightness directly, rather than relying on proprietary RGB conversion logic. KNX also says the revision adds standardised functions for device identification, metering, diagnostics and maintenance, which should make behaviour more consistent across products from different vendors.
Remote access is another focus. KNX says the Cloud Interface has been integrated into the standard so KNXnet/IP installations can be reached securely without a VPN. In practical terms, that gives integrators and service teams a common method for commissioning, diagnostics and support, reducing dependence on vendor-specific remote access tools and extra network setup.
The release also standardises firmware updates for individual devices. KNX says this should simplify maintenance, support longer product lifecycles and provide a consistent update process across manufacturers. It also positions the standard more closely towards compliance with the EU’s upcoming Cyber Resilience Act, which is expected to place greater emphasis on secure update mechanisms and product security.
On the IoT side, KNX has aligned its test specifications with the latest KNX IoT system architecture, covering the 3rd Party API, Point API and KNX IoT Router. That matters because KNX IoT has been a gradual extension of the standard since Version 3.0 was launched in 2022, when the association first formalised those API specifications for members. The latest revision appears to build on that foundation by making implementation and testing more uniform across classic installations and newer IP-based deployments.
KNX Standard v3.0.5 is now available to manufacturers through MyKNX.
