Amazfit unveils the T-Rex Dual Solar, a rugged smartwatch featuring a vivid AMOLED screen and a groundbreaking dual-sided solar charging system aimed at extending battery life for outdoor enthusiasts.
Amazfit has pushed its rugged T-Rex line into new territory with the launch of the T-Rex Dual Solar, a smartwatch that combines an AMOLED display with solar charging on both the front of the watch and its rear plate. The device is pitched at outdoor users who want a brighter screen than the usual power-saving transreflective panels, but without giving up the endurance normally associated with solar-equipped expedition watches.
According to Amazfit, the rear charging surface is built into a glass-ceramic back plate and is larger than the front panel, giving the watch a second way to harvest light when it is not being worn. That design is intended to address one of the long-standing compromises in the category: users usually have to choose between a vivid display and long battery life. Amazfit says the watch can even continue gathering power off the wrist, with a Solar Priority Mode designed to make the most of that exposure.
The company says the 660mAh battery is rated for up to 25 days of typical use and 41 hours in Accuracy GPS mode. Under its stated test conditions, three hours a day in 50,000 lux sunlight can extend typical use to 34 days. That places the watch in direct competition with Garmin’s solar models, which have long dominated the premium adventure segment and have generally forced buyers to trade AMOLED vibrancy for solar endurance.
Amazfit has also given the T-Rex Dual Solar the sort of hardware expected in a premium outdoor watch. It has a 1.32-inch AMOLED display with a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, sapphire crystal, a Grade 5 titanium bezel and 10 ATM water resistance. The watch includes maps, turn-by-turn navigation, waypoint tools, ski maps, LiveShare location sharing and a red-light torch for night use. The dual-solar design is the most notable feature, but the rest of the specification sheet is clearly aimed at serious use in the field.
The price, however, marks a clear shift for a brand better known for value-led wearables. The T-Rex Dual Solar is listed at $649.99 in the US and is already available through Amazfit’s website and Amazon, according to the company and launch reports from technology outlets. Whether the dual-sided solar system delivers the battery life promised on paper will depend on real-world testing, but the concept is notable: it is one of the first attempts to pair a bright AMOLED panel with solar charging on both sides of the watch.
