TCL unveils its most balanced smartphone yet, the P80 Ultra, featuring a groundbreaking AMOLED-NXTPAPER display, advanced camera system, and a long-term upgrade commitment, signalling a shift into premium territory at IFA 2026.
TCL has used IFA 2026 to push its smartphone ambitions further into premium territory, with the P80 Ultra receiving an Innovation Award at the Berlin trade show. The company presents the handset as its most fully rounded phone yet, built around a broader balance of display quality, imaging, battery life and software support rather than a single headline feature. The award also underlines TCL’s effort to position its mobile division as more than a budget alternative in an increasingly crowded market.
At the centre of the device is a 6.83-inch 1.5K NXTPAPER AMOLED panel, the first time TCL has fused its NXTPAPER concept with a true AMOLED screen. The display runs at 2772 x 1280, supports a 120Hz refresh rate and reaches a peak brightness of 3,200 nits, with TCL claiming full DCI-P3 colour coverage. The company says the NXTPAPER layer is intended to reduce glare and blue-light exposure, while a dedicated key switches between standard viewing, a paper-like mode and a stripped-back Max Ink setting for longer reading sessions.
The camera system is built around versatility rather than raw pixel counts. TCL leads with a 50MP 3x periscope telephoto camera with optical and electronic stabilisation, backed by a 50MP main sensor, an 8MP autofocus ultra-wide lens and a 32MP front-facing camera. TCL also includes its MuseFilm imaging software, which adds built-in filters aimed at giving photographs a more deliberate look straight from the device.
Under the bonnet, the P80 Ultra uses MediaTek’s Dimensity 7400 Elite chip, paired with 8GB of RAM and storage options of up to 512GB. TCL is pitching the handset for everyday use, including multitasking, streaming and casual gaming, rather than benchmark-chasing performance. The phone also carries a 5,800mAh battery with up to 45W wired charging, IP68 protection against water and dust, and Android 16 at launch.
TCL says the phone will receive four generations of operating system upgrades and seven years of security updates from its launch date, a commitment that materially affects long-term ownership value. The device also meets EU Ecodesign requirements on repairability and energy use, according to TCL, and is now on sale in selected EU markets. In the UK, the 256GB model is priced at £479.99 and the 512GB version at £529.99, with Amazon availability due from early October.
