TerraMaster expands its storage solutions with the D8 Hybrid 2, a compact eight-bay enclosure combining high-capacity SATA drives with speedy NVMe slots, suited for media professionals and backup needs, but limited by USB throughput capacity.
TerraMaster’s D8 Hybrid 2 is a compact eight-bay storage enclosure that aims to combine fast working space with high-capacity archive storage in one box. It pairs four M.2 2280 NVMe slots with four 3.5-inch SATA bays, and connects to a computer through a 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port. TerraMaster says the design is intended for video editing, backups, media libraries and NAS expansion, with a maximum raw capacity of up to 152TB.
In physical terms, the enclosure uses an aluminium chassis with a plastic exterior and measures roughly 8.75 inches wide, 6 inches high and 7 inches deep. Unpopulated, it weighs about 4 pounds. The layout is designed for simple drive installation: the SATA bays use tool-free trays, while the NVMe slots sit behind a side panel secured by thumb screws. TerraMaster also includes screws for mounting 2.5-inch drives in the trays, which broadens the range of supported hardware.
The rear panel is practical rather than elaborate. It holds the power input, the USB-C data connection and a large cooling fan. TerraMaster also adds a Power Management switch with two operating modes. In Power Save mode, the enclosure can enter a deeper sleep when idle; in Active mode, the drives themselves sleep when they are not in use. The company claims this helps balance convenience and power use, although reviewers note that such features are most useful in a desktop environment rather than a more general storage setup.
Under the hood, the enclosure uses RealTek controllers and is bundled with TPC Backupper, a rebranded version of Aomei Backupper, for basic backup work. The main limitation is built into the interface: a single 10Gbps USB link must serve all eight bays, so the enclosure cannot deliver the full theoretical performance of multiple NVMe SSDs at once. That makes the D8 Hybrid 2 better suited to users who need one box for both speed and capacity than to those seeking maximum SSD throughput.
