Apple's new AirPods blur the line between high-end and budget models with added features

While the AirPods Pro 3 retain their position as the premium option, the AirPods 5 now offer a compelling mix of features and value, challenging traditional distinctions in Apple’s earbud lineup.

Apple’s latest AirPods comparison is less straightforward than the price gap suggests. The AirPods Pro 3 remain the more capable model, but the AirPods 5 now borrow enough of Apple’s higher-end feature set to make them a credible alternative for many buyers. Reviewers at PhoneArena and Tom’s Guide both describe the AirPods 5 as unusually strong value, while reserving the Pro model for listeners who want the best noise control, the strongest sound and the fuller health package.

The biggest distinction is still physical design. The AirPods Pro 3 use silicone ear tips and sit inside the ear canal, which improves passive isolation and helps active noise cancellation work more effectively. The AirPods 5 keep Apple’s open-fit shape, which some users will find more comfortable for long sessions and less intrusive than in-ear buds. That difference also affects weight: the AirPods 5 are lighter, while the Pro model is slightly larger and heavier.

Noise cancellation is where Apple draws the clearest line between the two. The Pro 3 are said to deliver up to three times the noise reduction of the AirPods 5, and that advantage is backed by the ear-tip seal as much as by the electronics. Both models share the H2 chip and support features such as Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, Conversation Awareness, personalised spatial audio and live translation, but the Pro model is the better choice for commuting, flights and other noisy settings. Tom’s Guide and PhoneArena both note that the AirPods 5 are unusually capable for an open-fit pair, yet they still cannot match the Pro 3 when outside noise is a serious issue.

Battery life also favours the Pro model. Apple says the AirPods Pro 3 can run for up to eight hours with active noise cancellation enabled, while the AirPods 5 are rated for four hours in their standard form and five hours with the wireless-charging case. With the case included, the Pro 3 reach about 24 hours, compared with 20 hours for the standard AirPods 5 and 22 hours for the wireless-charging version. The Pro model also supports rapid top-ups, with roughly an hour and a half of playback from a five-minute charge.

The Pro 3 add another layer of functionality through health features. Apple has built in heart-rate sensing for workout tracking, along with tools focused on hearing protection and hearing assistance. Those features may be decisive for people who exercise regularly with their earbuds, but they are unlikely to matter as much to listeners who mainly want music, podcasts and calls. On pure audio quality, reviewers at Tom’s Guide say the Pro 3 clearly have the edge, describing their sound as richer and more detailed than the AirPods 5.

Price sharpens the choice. The AirPods 5 start at €149, while the wireless-charging version costs €169. The AirPods Pro 3 are priced at €249, leaving a substantial gap between the two families. That makes the AirPods 5 the more accessible option for most buyers, especially those who prefer an open design and do not need the strongest possible noise cancellation. The Pro 3, by contrast, are the better fit for users who will actually use the heart-rate sensor, the stronger hearing features, the longer battery life and the superior isolation. For many shoppers, the decision is less about which pair is better in absolute terms than which compromises are easier to live with.
