Microsoft unveils a magnetic USB-C charging system exclusive to its Surface Laptop Ultra, aiming to combine convenience, design elegance, and compatibility for its most powerful Surface device yet.
Microsoft is trying to give its Surface line a small but potentially useful distinction at the high end: a magnetic USB-C charging system for the Surface Laptop Ultra. According to Notebookcheck and Microsoft’s own product listing, the feature pairs a special USB-C port on the laptop with a dedicated 140W cable that snaps into place magnetically, echoing the convenience of MagSafe on MacBooks and the older Surface Connect approach.
The company is presenting the idea as both a practical charging upgrade and a design statement. In Microsoft’s demonstration, the connector appears intended to make plugging in easier and to reduce accidental strain on the port, while still using USB-C rather than a proprietary charging standard. Notebookcheck reported that the system is being introduced first on the Surface Laptop Ultra, which is meant to stand apart from a wave of competing Nvidia Spark-based laptops from MSI, Asus, Lenovo and others.
There are, however, clear limits to the implementation. The magnetic USB-C port on the laptop itself remains broadly compatible with standard USB-C devices, but the cable is not a universal accessory. Notebookcheck said the plug is thicker than an ordinary USB-C connector, which means it will not work with other USB-C products, including smartphones. Microsoft has suggested that the idea could appear in other PCs later, but it has not given any concrete timetable or product list.
The wider Surface Laptop Ultra package places the charging feature within a premium machine rather than a mass-market model. Windows Central reported that the laptop uses NVIDIA’s RTX Spark superchip, runs Windows on Arm and is positioned as Microsoft’s most powerful Surface device to date. The machine also includes a 15-inch 120Hz mini-LED display, a large haptic touchpad, and support for up to 128GB of unified memory, with pre-orders starting at $2,600.
Microsoft is also selling the charging hardware separately. Its US store lists a Surface 140W USB-C Power Adapter priced at $99.99, with availability set for October 16, 2026. The company says the adapter is designed specifically for the Surface Laptop Ultra, although it remains broadly compatible with USB-C charging devices; the detachable cable is sold separately. Taken together, the hardware and the accessory suggest Microsoft is trying to revive the appeal of magnetic charging without abandoning USB-C’s wider ecosystem.
