Fujifilm gives its Instax Square 2 instant camera a softer look and warmer tones

The redesigned Square 2 adds warm and cool optical filters, while new Soft Haze film offers lower-contrast prints when both products launch in late October.

Fujifilm has unveiled the Instax Square 2, a refreshed square-format instant camera that keeps the brand’s point-and-shoot simplicity while adding a new tone selector. According to the company’s announcement, the camera arrives alongside a new Soft Haze film stock designed to produce a gentler, lower-contrast look, with both products scheduled for release in late October. The launch extends Fujifilm’s square Instax line rather than replacing its core approach: a straightforward analogue camera aimed at users who want immediate prints without menu-heavy controls.

The Square 2 is a redesign of the familiar Instax square body rather than a wholesale reinvention. Fujifilm says it will be sold in slate blue, misty white and brick red, and the camera remains relatively large for a compact instant model, measuring about 13.9cm by 11.9cm by 7.1cm and weighing 450 grams. That size reflects the format itself: the camera produces square prints measuring 6.2cm on each side, which naturally require a chunkier body than the company’s smaller Instax Mini models.

Its most notable new feature sits by the lens. A selector lets the user place either a warm or cool filter in the optical path before shooting, changing the colour balance at capture rather than after the fact. Warm adds a slight golden cast, while Cool shifts the image towards bluer tones; there is also an off position for those who want the standard Instax rendering. Exposure and flash remain automatic, and a three-position ring around the lens switches between close-up, standard and landscape distances. Fujifilm also keeps a selfie mirror on the front, a practical touch for framing group shots and self-portraits.

The company is also widening the appeal of the square system with Soft Haze film. Fujifilm says the new stock reduces saturation and contrast, while keeping bright highlights and softer, warmer shadows. Each pack contains 10 exposures and is intended for any camera that uses Instax Square film. On the practical side, the Square 2 runs on four AA batteries, which are included in the box, alongside a wrist strap and quick-start guide. That detail may matter to buyers who prefer replaceable batteries over the proprietary cells used by some older Instax cameras. Fujifilm has set the camera’s US price at $119.95, while Soft Haze film is priced at $18.99 a pack.
