Redmi launches the Note 17 5G in India, challenging the OnePlus Nord CE 6 Lite with a larger AMOLED display, bigger battery, and extended software support, sparking a renewed mid-range smartphone rivalry.
Redmi has added another budget-minded 5G phone to its Indian line-up with the Note 17 5G, pitching it against the OnePlus Nord CE 6 Lite in a market where battery life, display quality and software support often decide the sale. According to TelecomTalk’s comparison, both devices sit below the Rs 30,000 mark, but they take different routes: Redmi leans on a larger AMOLED panel, a far bigger silicon-carbon battery and longer promised software support, while OnePlus counters with a higher-refresh LCD, a more capable chipset and more storage at the top end.
The display difference is one of the clearest divides. TelecomTalk says the Redmi uses a 6.9-inch AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, while NanoReview lists it at 7 inches and also notes a stronger screen-to-body ratio than the OnePlus. The Nord CE 6 Lite comes with a 6.72-inch IPS LCD and a 144Hz refresh rate, plus OnePlus’ Aqua Touch support for use with wet fingers. In practical terms, Redmi is aiming for richer contrast and a larger viewing area, while OnePlus is pushing smoother scrolling and a slightly more restrained panel with typical brightness rated at up to 800 nits.
Performance and storage follow a similar pattern. TelecomTalk says the Redmi Note 17 5G runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 4, while the Nord CE 6 Lite uses MediaTek’s Dimensity 7400 Apex. Both chips are built on a 4nm process, but the OnePlus device appears to have the edge on benchmark performance, with 91mobiles showing stronger Geekbench multi-core results for the Nord family in related testing. The Redmi offers up to 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage, with expansion support up to 2TB, while the OnePlus model goes as high as 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
Camera hardware also splits the two phones. TelecomTalk describes the Redmi as relying on a single 50-megapixel Sony main sensor and an 8-megapixel front camera, with AI features and dual-video recording support. The OnePlus phone uses a 50-megapixel Omnivision main sensor alongside a 2-megapixel depth camera and an 8-megapixel selfie camera. On battery life, Redmi appears strongest on paper: TelecomTalk says it packs an 8,000mAh cell with 44W wired charging and 22.5W wireless charging, while OnePlus offers a 7,000mAh battery with 45W wired charging, 10W reverse charging and bypass charging. Software support is another Redmi advantage, with the company promising four years of OS upgrades and six years of security updates, compared with two years of major Android updates and four years of security patches for the OnePlus model. Pricing starts at Rs 24,999 for the Redmi and Rs 25,999 for the base OnePlus variant, with both topping out at Rs 27,999 in 8GB/128GB trim, although OnePlus also sells a 256GB version for Rs 30,999.
