Microsoft has rolled out a significant update to its Power Platform suite, introducing a modernised control system, expanded automation capabilities, and AI-assisted security tools aimed at streamlining workflows and improving app security.
Microsoft’s latest Power Platform update is centred on a broader push to make the suite more consistent, more modern and easier to extend across low-code and pro-code workflows. In its July-August feature release, the company said the emphasis is on the modern control system in Power Apps, capacity sharing in Power Automate and an AI-assisted security workflow for Power Pages, while training content has also been refreshed across the platform.
The most significant change for app makers is the general availability of the data grid modern control in canvas apps. Microsoft describes it as a Fluent UI-based replacement path for the older table experience, with built-in search, automatic column generation, sortable fields, row selection and support for richer column types such as hyperlinks, phone numbers and buttons. The company also says the control includes accessibility features such as keyboard navigation and screen-reader support, along with a migration path for existing apps rather than a forced redesign.
Microsoft has also tightened the modern toggle, checkbox and form controls so they behave more like a unified control set. That includes consistent property naming, typed values for key settings, new tooltip support and a true view-only mode. The modern form control now uses improved data cards and more reliable binding, formula evaluation and reset behaviour. In practical terms, that should reduce the kinds of glitches makers often encounter when building edit and create forms against live data.
The update also expands the starter experience for new canvas apps. Microsoft has added new Fluent 2 templates, including hub, feature and list pages, and refreshed gallery templates so they use modern controls throughout. It has also introduced a new rating control with half-star precision, expanded text styling options for the card control and increased the modern icon library to about 180 icons, bringing it in line with the classic set. For teams still using earlier Fluent UI “hero” controls in custom pages and Teams apps, Microsoft says there is now documented upgrade guidance to help with migration.
Power Automate receives two notable additions. Flow groups now let organisations share the capacity of one process licence across up to 25 solution-aware cloud flows, which Microsoft says is aimed at workloads with predictable usage. The company has also released a Power Automate plugin for GitHub Copilot CLI and Claude Code, allowing users to create, edit, run and debug cloud flows from the terminal using natural language commands. That fits with the broader 2026 release wave 1 plan, which calls out further work on licensing, flow recovery and desktop-flow capabilities.
Power Pages is getting an AI-powered security agent in public preview. Microsoft says the assistant works inside the security workspace, where it can explain the current posture of a site, suggest fixes for authentication and authorisation settings and help troubleshoot sign-in problems. The company says the agent asks for approval before changing configuration, which is designed to keep makers in control while speeding up routine security work. Microsoft also said it had updated learning paths and labs across Power Apps, Power Automate, Power Pages, AI Builder, connectors, administration and developer content.
