Xiaomi India rebrands smart-home products under Mijia to evolve into a full home-tech brand

Xiaomi India launches the Mijia brand to strengthen its presence in the connected home market, aiming to convert smartphone users into comprehensive home-tech customers amidst rising demand for smart appliances.

Xiaomi India has introduced Mijia by Xiaomi in the country, using the move to mark 12 years of business in India and signal a broader push into connected home and lifestyle products. For a company still best known in India for smartphones, the launch suggests a more deliberate attempt to position itself as a full smart-home player rather than only a device maker.

That shift matters because Xiaomi has spent years widening its local portfolio beyond handsets. It already sells smart televisions, tablets, wearables, security cameras, air purifiers and other internet-connected products in India. According to Xiaomi’s announcement, those existing home and lifestyle devices will gradually move under the Mijia banner, with air purifiers likely among the first to be rebranded.

Mijia is not a new name in Xiaomi’s global strategy. Gizmochina reported that the brand was created in 2016 as Xiaomi’s smart-home ecosystem, designed to group together the company’s in-house appliances and devices. The same outlet later noted that Xiaomi renamed the label Xiaomi Smart Life in 2020 as part of a wider effort to unify its global branding, although the underlying identity remained tied to Xiaomi’s home-products push.

Xiaomi has not yet said which products will arrive in India first, but the company has confirmed plans to enter the large home appliance category under the Mijia name. Gadgets 360 reported that Xiaomi India is aiming at this segment with a localised “phone plus ecosystem” strategy, pointing to a broader commercial bet on connected products that work together rather than stand alone.

The timing fits a larger industry trend. Indian demand for smart-home devices is rising as buyers look for appliances that can be controlled through apps and linked across a single ecosystem. Xiaomi is betting that its large smartphone base can help it convert users into buyers of matching home products, especially if those devices connect smoothly through HyperOS and fit its Human × Car × Home strategy. The company has not yet revealed a product roadmap, but the direction is clear: Xiaomi wants to be judged as a home-tech brand as much as a phone brand.
