Ecosystem lock-in continues to challenge Android's appeal for iPhone switchers

While switching from iPhone to Android has become smoother, the persistent interconnectedness of Apple’s ecosystem still presents significant hurdles, underscoring long-standing advantages in software support and service integration.

Moving from iPhone to Android is far less disruptive than it once was, but the transition still exposes some stubborn differences between the two platforms. Engadget’s experience suggests the biggest pain point is not data transfer or account setup, which have become much smoother, but the way Apple’s ecosystem still holds together more tightly than most Android alternatives.

For many users, the practical move now begins with familiar services rather than technical workarounds. Contacts, photos and calendar entries can usually move across automatically if a user already relies on Google services, while WhatsApp chat migration no longer requires third-party tools. Android Central says that broader switching guides now focus as much on app continuity, iMessage issues and music libraries as on the basic mechanics of moving files.

Even so, ecosystem lock-in still matters. Engadget noted that iCloud files remain accessible through a browser after the switch, but Google One is the more natural fit for Android users who want their storage and backup tools to work natively. That reflects a wider pattern identified by SlashGear and Gizmochina: the inconvenience is rarely about the handset itself, but about the web of services, accessories and habits built around it.

Software support is another major reason the comparison remains uneven. Google and Samsung now promise up to seven years of operating system updates on some devices, but Apple has a longer and better-established record of supporting phones over the long term. Computerworld and Android Central both stress that moving platforms is easier than before, including improving eSIM transfer tools, yet the durability of the software experience still gives iPhone an edge for many buyers who value stability over customisation.
