As the first baby boomers reach their 80s and increasingly live alone, start-ups are launching accessible, AI-driven tools, from wellness calls to safety assessments, to support independence without adding complexity, marking a shift in eldercare innovation.
Start-ups aimed at older adults are multiplying as the first baby boomers enter their 80s and many continue to live alone. That shift is pushing demand for tools that can support independence without adding complexity, from routine check-in calls to home-safety checks and speech-to-text support for people with hearing loss.
One of the clearest examples is AloneAssist, which has begun offering a daily AI-led wellness call for older adults who live alone. The service places a morning phone call, sends family members a written summary and triggers an alert if the call is not answered. AloneAssist says it works on landlines and flip phones, so no app or Wi-Fi is needed, and it also includes a dashboard showing call history, mood trends and other status updates. The company says pricing starts at $14.99 a month or $120 a year.
The wider trend is not limited to welfare calls. Ask Proxy is positioning itself as a private personal assistant by text, with the company saying it searches for lower prices, automatically applies coupons and does not sell user data. Ask Odie is taking a similar route, but with a broader focus on helping people research, organise and understand digital tools and permissions. PeterAI is aiming at the same audience through voice, offering a calm, conversational assistant for older adults who do not want to manage menus or a new app.
Other products are targeting companionship and safety. Ato is a screen-free voice companion built to feel simple enough for older users to operate without technical training. SafeHome AI, meanwhile, turns smartphone photos and a short questionnaire into a home-safety assessment that ranks fall risks and suggests fixes. Dicto is designed for people who struggle to hear, displaying speech as large on-screen text in real time and keeping a scrollable conversation history so nothing is lost.
