SpaceX and Tesla are developing the colossal Terafab plant in Texas, potentially the largest building globally, to meet surging demand for AI chips and secure strategic independence in semiconductor manufacturing.
Elon Musk’s companies SpaceX and Tesla are pressing ahead with a vast semiconductor campus in Texas that they say could become the largest building in the world. According to a company statement and Musk’s post on X, the project, known as Terafab, will be built in Grimes County, outside Houston, and is intended to support the two firms’ growing appetite for advanced chips. The initial phase is expected to cover more than 100 million square feet and carries an estimated capital cost of $16.8 billion.
The facility is being designed to handle several stages of chip production under one roof, including manufacturing, packaging and testing. SpaceX says the site will make logic and memory devices aimed at edge computing and inference workloads, the kind used for fast, local AI processing rather than large centralised data centres. That includes chips for Tesla’s Optimus robots and Cybercab autonomous vehicle programme, as well as high-power processors for SpaceX’s planned space-based data centres.
Musk has presented the project as a response to tight supply in the semiconductor market. SpaceX said the combined demand from its own businesses and Tesla could eventually outstrip global chip supply, making a dedicated fab necessary. In earlier comments reported by TechCrunch in March, Musk said the companies needed to build Terafab because outside manufacturers were not moving fast enough to meet their AI and robotics requirements.
The scale of the proposal has continued to grow. In May, filings cited by TechCrunch suggested SpaceX was considering spending $55 billion at the outset and as much as $119 billion over the life of the project. Tom’s Hardware reported this week that construction appears to be advancing quickly, with drone footage showing work on the foundation and permits issued for temporary facilities to support contractors and Tesla staff.
The site is also being pitched as a major employer. SpaceX says Terafab will create more than 3,000 jobs and bring advanced manufacturing to Texas. Musk described it on X as a move to build AI chip production at scale for use on Earth and in space, while also claiming the facility will be “the biggest and most valuable building on Earth, by far.” The project remains a striking bet on in-house chipmaking at a time when access to high-end semiconductors has become a strategic issue for AI, robotics and aerospace companies alike.
