Google unveils its latest Home Speaker with a focus on eco-friendly materials, reduced packaging, and lower carbon footprint, highlighting a shift towards more sustainable smart device manufacturing in 2026.
Google’s latest Home Speaker is built to look almost invisible in a room, but the company is putting much more emphasis on how it is made. Introduced in June 2026, the fabric-wrapped speaker keeps the same understated, rounded form factor familiar to smart-speaker users, yet Google says the design has been reworked around recycled materials, reduced adhesives and lighter packaging. In its product environmental report, the company estimates the device will generate 44kg of carbon dioxide equivalent over a four-year lifespan.
The most notable change is the 3D-knit outer shell, which Google says cuts material use by about 63% and reduces adhesive use by 99% versus the original Nest Audio. That matters because glue can make disassembly and recycling harder. Google says the fabric is made from at least 87% recycled polyester and spandex by weight, while the speaker itself contains at least 37% recycled materials by weight.
Packaging has also been simplified. Google says the retail box uses no plastic and relies instead on recycled paper, moulded fibre, recycled newsprint and bamboo. The company has also pointed to broader progress across its hardware line, saying it has removed 150 tonnes of plastic from manufacturing and logistics packaging and a further 50 tonnes through a switch from foam shipping dividers to fibre-based alternatives.
Even so, Google’s own figures suggest the biggest environmental burden remains everyday power use. The company attributes 67% of the speaker’s lifetime emissions to consumer use, compared with 27% from production, 5% from transport and 1% from end-of-life processing. Google says the device ships with a DOE Level VI adapter, the top efficiency tier for external power supplies, but the larger point is that smart speakers stay connected and listening all the time, which limits how far material improvements alone can reduce their footprint. The speaker is also positioned as a capable hardware upgrade, with 360-degree audio, three far-field microphones, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4 and Thread 1.3 support, plus pairing with Google TV Streamer for spatial surround sound.
